GUIDE TO NIGHTLIFE IN CANGGU: 'GU LIKE A LOCAL

Updated: Feb 8, 2018

If you've read any of my previous posts, *cough* 4 Reasons I Love Canggu or Ultimate Guide to Bali Beach Clubs, you already know that my heart truly lies in Canggu. I've already sung all of the praises of why I'm yearning to get back to the 'gu, so this article is crafted more specifically for the Canggu-goer looking for an up-to-date guide on the hottest night life in town. Enjoy!

If you've spent any time in Canggu at all, you probably know Old Man's reasonably well. For anyone new to the 'gu, Old Mans is a restaurant turned bar at night right on Batu Bolong beach. It is fully outdoor (very common in Bali) and is very eclectically bright coloured and appropriately beach themed. I'd say that Old Man's is the most popular watering hole in Canggu, as it's generally got people around every night of the week. Although, the "best" nights to go, if you're up for a real party, are Wednesday and Sunday. They've always got a DJ and dance floor going all evening, so if that's your scene it'll be sure to please.

Protip: Wednesdays they do a huge BEER PONG tournament- if that's up your alley be sure to enquire and sign up beforehand. Stop by Old Man's any day between 6 and 7 for the best happy hour in town- buy one get one free on ALL drinks! One of my favourite memories is ordering two glasses of chardonnay; the bartender smiling and asking whether I'd like them in one or two glasses. I waltzed around for the duration of happy hour with a wine glass filled to the absolute brim and a huge smile painted across my face.

Couldn't be happier at Old Man's happy hour.

Deus is COOL! Like really cool- half the time when I'm there I feel like gloating about my coolness or feel self conscious, questioning whether I'm cool enough to be there. It's basically a real fancy shmancy motorbike shop with gorgeous custom bikes and gear, attached to a beautiful open concept and open roof restaurant turned bar/ dance floor at night- which seems to be a reoccurring theme in Bali. Their food is good, on the pricer side (for Bali), but quite good, and if you ask me, what you're really paying for is the atmosphere. Their drinks; also good- they have a really neat one which reminds me of Canadian caesars: it was just a Bintang (the local cheap lager) with ice and homemade sambal (chilli/ garlic hot sauce) mixed in, with some kind of spiced/ salty rim. Yummmm.

Protips(s) for Deus: 1. On Tuesdays, they do TACO AND TATTOO night. Basically, if you sign up ahead of time, and buy yourself some tacos, you get a free tattoo from one of the local artists that sets up right at one of the tables in the restaurant. Sounds super sketchy, right? Hear me out- the sketch factor is actually minimal, the artists are professionals and actually do amazing (and sterile) work. Also, by no means do you personally need to sign up for a tattoo, but why not stop by on Tuesday for dinner so you can have a look in person at what all the commotion is about. I promise, you will have one of your finest "only in Bali..." moments. 2. On Wednesday nights- later on, think after 9ish, they do Reggae night. We're talkin' live, Indonesian dreadlocked dudes performing live reggae. All I have to say is it is AWESOME and you must experience it for yourself.

I'm not going to sugar coat these reviews, cause heck, this is all blabber coming directly from my brain and in no way shape or form am I being compensated for them. The Lawn isn't my favourite! It's one of the fancier places in Canggu, and I really don't want to say this but I'm going to say it anyways- it's got a bit of a pretentious vibe. However, man it is very beautiful and it is arguably the best place in Canggu to sip a cocktail at sunset. I'd say it's worth checking out at least once.

Protip: check it out on Friday, as they do half priced drinks and appetizers in the evening. It would also be smart to make a reservation as they tend to fill up! Their live music on Fridays is also excellent, they had an amazing guy with just his guitar doing Bon Iver covers.

Sunset at The Lawn

You know how I said Deus is cool? OK- now multiply that by 10, add in a legitimate skate bowl and a live band all within the confines of a bar- and you get Pretty Poison. You heard me right, this bar has got a full on skater bowl in the middle. As you're having your drinks and enjoying the tunes, you watch skater dudes show off their moves on their skateboards. This isn't for the faint of heart- sometimes the boards go flying (I saw one break a beer bottle) and sometimes the skaters get hurt (we saw a pretty gnarly accident that I won't even get into describing incase anyone's queasy like I am). This bar is super badass and I recommend you check it out at least once.

Protip: the top nights to go here are Tueday and Thursday, they've usually got something going on like a live band- or one night we actually saw a tattooing situation happening similar to Tuesdays at Deus. Apparently in Bali, there's no opposition to intoxicated receiving of tattoos. Huh. When in Bali, I suppose.

Sandbar is basically just the beach (lol) with a small stage, and they set up a few "bars" on fold up tables where you can buy drinks. It's fun, you can watch the waves crash in the dark while dancing the night away to Top 40. This is where people tend to go once all the other bars are closed for the night, as they stay open until the wee hours. I'd say check it out any night you're up for some dancing and a party, there's no feeling quite like dancing barefoot in the moonlight on the beach in Bali.

I hope this helps you design your Canggu bar hopping plans to a tee. Have fun and remember, don't drink and drive your scooter!
