WHY I PRIORITIZE TRAVEL OVER CAREER

Most recent university graduates in my position are doing one of two things:

  1. Applying for a million jobs and trying to kickstart their dream career (or any career... anything that pays...)

  2. Starting or applying for grad school and taking the steps necessary to further their academic career. (Again, it all circles back to career- the ultimate goal being to make some money. Makes sense.)

I, however, am not willing to jeporadize my freedom and desire for adventure for financial stability and settling down into the beginnings of a traditional career. By no means am I saying that the traditional trajectory after gradutation is bad, or wrong; it's just not what I want right now. And that is OK. I'm also not saying that I never want a career and I would like to permanently be a gypsy drifter. It's alright to be in an in between phase, and it's alright to explore a path that is different from the path of the majority.

Personally, I have found that I have learned just as much in my travels as I ever have in the four walls of a university classroom. Arguably, most importantly, it is during these instances that I learn about myself and what I want rather than simply the world around me. It's like the difference between learning how the wolrd works, and learning where I fit within it.

As someone who has completed their bachelors degree, and still is unsure about which "career" path they'd like to pursue, in my mind, travel and adventure seem like the only logical answer. I am looking forward to removing myself from my comfort zone and my little bubble in order to truely isolate what matters and what I care about.

When I move to Bali, I will be getting rid of the majority of things that I own. I really look forward to this experience, as the conclusion I've come to in the past couple months is that accumulation of positions weigh you down and holds you back rather than really adding any true value to your life.

Being away for a month with only a few clothes and my camera made me recoignize how little my possesions at home really contribute to my happiness. I was much happier with nothing, being surrounded by warmth, beauty and laughter, than I am at home with an apartment, car and an income (and way too many clothes).

I know this sounds really froofie and idealistic. I also recoignize that being somewhere on vacation, and actually living day to day and hustling to support yourself are two very different things.

It's hard to put into words why I feel like I need to move to Bali. The island gave me this amazing feeling of belonging, with this pull that I can't argue with- I need to be back.

I have no doubt that this decision will benefit me in the long run. If anything, I will grow and learn as a person, which is truely priceless if you ask me.

Your intuition knows better than anyone else in your life- tell yourself what is the right thing to do. Don't be scared to take a risk- jobs and schools will always be there.
